Coordinated Public Transit - Human Services Transportation Plan![]() Tompkins Co. in NYS
Affordable transportation for human service agencies, their clients, and the public at large is a necessity for people to enjoy a decent quality of life. Some agencies transport clients with their own vehicles. Others purchase transportation or counsel clients to use transportation services. We have a growing family of mobility services and providers in Tompkins County. Further, we have public policy direction to use public funds in an efficient and productive manner, especially in a time of fiscal scarcity. We are all looking to save money, increase productivity, and provide access to critical services.
The coordinated planning process is not only a good idea, it's a requirement of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to apply for grants through the Sec 5310 Elderly & Individuals with Disabilities, Sec 5316 Job Access & Reverse Commute and Sec 5317 New Freedom Programs. Further, the Federal and State governments promote innovative community transportation services through the United-We-Ride initiative. |
If your agency purchases transportation (bus passes or taxi rides), transports clients, provides information, provides services for seniors, low income or individuals with disabilities, or manages federal funds which could be used to support transportation services, then you should participate in coordinated transportation planning.
All human service agencies, local governments and providers of transportation services are invited to participate on the Coordinated Plan Committee. Our meetings are open to the public.
We need your ideas, energy and criticism to improve our work. Contact us. You can sign-up for email notices of Coordinated Plan meetings and newletters.

With gas costs over $4/gallon, the costs of transportation for commuters, human service agencies and the public at large is rising to the point where people step back and look at their alternatives.
Every month, a group of people from human service agencies, planners, and transportation providers meet to discuss how to bring transportation choices to more Tompkins County residents. There are funding opportunities for mobility initiatives and progress how to co-market services. We need to keep working how to create workable mobility choices for more people and to bring them into the mainstream. The public is invited to our meetings. We are especially interested in reaching out to people or advocates for limited income persons, people with disabilities, senior citizens and people with limited English proficiency. We are inclusive and need your ideas and questions.
